GAD-7 Calculator

The GAD-7 is the standard 7-question screening scale for anxiety symptoms — the one most clinics pair with the PHQ-9. Answer for the last two weeks and get your score instantly, with an honest explanation of what the range means.

Over the last 2 weeks, how often have you been bothered by the following problems?

1. Feeling nervous, anxious or on edge
2. Not being able to stop or control worrying
3. Worrying too much about different things
4. Trouble relaxing
5. Being so restless that it is hard to sit still
6. Becoming easily annoyed or irritable
7. Feeling afraid as if something awful might happen

What the GAD-7 measures

The seven questions cover the core of generalized anxiety: feeling on edge, uncontrollable worry, worrying about many things at once, trouble relaxing, restlessness, irritability, and a sense that something awful might happen. Each scores 0–3 by frequency, for a total of 0–21. The standard bands are 0–4 minimal, 5–9 mild, 10–14 moderate, and 15–21 severe. A score of 10 or more is the usual trigger for a fuller in-person assessment.

Anxiety rarely travels alone — many people take the PHQ-9 alongside this, and use the box breathing and grounding tools here for rough moments between checks.

This is a self-assessment screening tool, not a diagnosis. Only a qualified professional who talks with you in person can diagnose a mental health condition. Scores are a snapshot of the last two weeks — they are most useful compared over time.

Frequently asked questions

Is the GAD-7 a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder?

No. It is a screening scale. At the cut-off of 10 it has roughly 89% sensitivity and 82% specificity for generalized anxiety disorder, and it also picks up other anxiety conditions. A diagnosis requires an in-person assessment by a qualified professional.

What GAD-7 score is considered severe?

15–21 is the severe band. At that level, guidelines and common sense agree: talk to a professional soon rather than relying on self-help alone. Scores of 10–14 (moderate) are also worth an in-person conversation.

Can my score change quickly?

Yes — the GAD-7 asks about the last two weeks, so a brutal fortnight at work or a family emergency can push it up temporarily. That is why the trend across several checks, saved on the My Results page, says more than any single number.

Are my answers private?

Yes. Scoring happens on your device, history lives only in your browser's local storage, and nothing is uploaded. You can delete your history at any time from My Results.
